Third Maritime Strike in Four Days as MV Jalveer Targeted Near Oman, Escalating Gulf of Oman Tensions
Escalating maritime tensions in the Gulf of Oman saw a third vessel attack in four days as MV Jalveer was struck near Oman following the US strike on tanker Settebello. All three missing Indian seafarers are confirmed dead. India lodged strong diplomatic protest while Iran and the United States exchanged conflicting claims over Strait of Hormuz security.
MV Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau flagged asphalt tanker, was targeted under similar circumstances near Oman. The latest strike adds to a rapidly deteriorating security situation across key shipping lanes in the region.
In a related development, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that all three missing Indian seafarers have died following a United States military strike on a tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The confirmation has further deepened diplomatic tensions surrounding the incidents.
Following the fatalities, India summoned the Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy and lodged a strong formal protest against the strike, signaling heightened diplomatic strain between the two nations over maritime security operations in the region.
Amid the escalating situation, Iran’s top joint military command issued a stern warning, stating it would fire upon any vessel attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, which has reportedly been largely closed for months, remains a focal point of geopolitical tension affecting global shipping routes.
Iranian media further reported that two United States ships had come under fire. However, United States Central Command categorically denied both the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and any attacks on its vessels, asserting that commercial shipping continues to transit the strait despite Iranian threats.
The sequence of attacks, conflicting claims, and diplomatic exchanges has significantly heightened uncertainty across one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, underscoring the fragile security environment in the Gulf region.
